Ampeg SVT 2 vs. SVT 4

Sign in to disble this ad
I searched back 15 pages (searched Ampeg SVT) and couldn't find this one at all, which surprised me.

So here we go.

I have a chance to get a used 2 for about $150 more than a used 4.

Convince me one way or another.

Cab will be 810AV.

Fire Away!!

BTW I played a new Pro 2 through the 810AV Saturday in my LMS and all I can say is wow. Fantastic fat tone.

two completely different amps

2 Pro - All tube
4 Pro - Tube pre / SS power

I run a 2pro since I just need to have tubes. 4 Pro will not sound anything like a 2 pro, sounds like a solid state with a little bit of girth to it. For $150, the 2Pro is a no brainer.

only problem will be wieght, 2 pro is a heavy SOB, 4 pro aint light but isn't as heavy as the 2.

4 PRO - is warm and clean sounding - no growl - more headroom for the low end
2 PRO - punchy with lots of growl - less headroom for low end.

Gor the 2 PRO and don't look back. There is nothing special tone wise of the 4 PRO.

2 pro has a tube power section. It's basically a rackmount version of an SVT-CL (with a couple additional things like the drive knob and a graphic EQ and stuff), so loud as hell. But heavy.

If the 2 Pro gives you enough volume in your live setting and you are ok with the weight, you're good to go. If you need more clean volume and don't need distortion from the amp take a look at the 4 Pro.

2 is even better than 2 Pro, IMHO. 2 and 2 pro are like VR and CL.

The only reason for not taking the 2 is the weight, which, I'm really feeling right now. On the flip side, it keeps you fit!

And if weight is a concern, there is a lot of better and lighter amp than the SVT4-PRO.

Get the SVT2 !

This is wrong. The 2 Pro has a completely different preamp than the SVT-CL. The 2 Pro is the preamp of the SVT 3 Pro and the power amp of the SVT-CL.

But it really does not matter because the thread is about a SVT II.

The CL being different than the 2 PRO. Yes

2 Pro and 3 Pro alike? Wrong. The 3 Pro Preamp has 3 Tubes for gain EQ, no Drive at gain/eq. And 2 Tubes for the master/driver sections of the Mosfet Power Amp. It is more similar to the CL than to the 2 PRO, in regard of preamp design/ sound.

The 2 Pro has gain drive. 5 Tubes for the Pre, and even more tubes for the driver. You can even create Heavy Guitar Distortions with it.

The SVP- PRO is lifted from the 2 PRO. I use it with the 3 PRO Tube/Mosfet power amp. Sounds many times better than the stock 3 Preamp( To me anyway ) I get a nice overdrive/distortion sound with both together.
