Have you tried using both the Speakon and 1/4" outputs (separately of course). Could be one of them is not working.

First place I would look is solder joints on the input jack. From there it would be tracing the signal through the stages till the point of failure is found.

Yeah I tried the input jacks. Since I got sound thru the effects return I figured that wasn't the issue. I'll look more closely at the input jack on my lunch break.

If the nut on the input jack is not snug, chances are good the solder joints could fail. Non-lead solder is more brittle, but required to be used in new production.

Do you own a Tech21 Bass Driver or VTBass? You could put one of those through the effects return and bypass the preamp section if you're in a pinch. Heck, you might even like it better.

I have the mxr bass di+ which I was thinking I could use if I had no other choice

Yes, that would work too. As long as its simply a preamp issue. The MXR is a good idea and can function as your preamp until you get it worked out.
