I have an opportunity to get an SVT-3 pro for $200 on my local CL. It needs a transformer replacement though. I was wondering it's worth it for me to dive on this, I desperately need an amp.
How much would it typically cost to have the the transformer replaced?
Also, I've read both good and bad stuff about the amps, so any "reviews" or advice would also be helpful (i.e. Tubes, etc).
Thanks,
Nate

I would say no. The transformers run about 200 or more I believe, and I wouldn't suspect the transformer actually. Those are one of the beefyest components in there.
You can find 3 pro's in good shape for $450 or better all day.

Okay, thank you. That's what I needed to know.

Yes pass. $200 for basically a parts amp is way too much.

probably pass. If it is certain the transformer is bad....

The transformers normally are beefy, and so is that one.... but when there is a low current winding, with thin wire, there is a risk if the manufacturer winds it wrong, because with a toroid, there is less padding between the fat wire and the thin, and thre is mount pressure applied....

I have seen the low voltage winding get cut, which makes the transformer useless in the amp. One case where an "E-I" core transformer is better... almost cannot happen with them.

Great amp bad condition. I paid $400 for mine about 15 years ago so they're holding their price well.
