Ampeg SVT 4 Pro Final Question

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have asked some questions about my amp, have gotten a few answers but nothing solid. So channel B on my 4 pro is not working. Channel A is working great, no problems whatsoever. My tech said that it can work fine only using the one channel, and that the output transistors on the b channel were fried. Now I am trying to sell this amp, for pretty damn cheap, just want to get rid of it. There is this guy, who is interested in the amp, that is emailing me saying that he talked to Ampeg and there is one single power transformer and that one channel can't work. I just want to know from the Ampeg guru's what your opinion is on this, because my information came from a certified tech, and so did his.

You should direct this question to your tech. Did your tech actually hook it up to a speaker to try the "A" side of the amp to see if what he is suggesting will actually work? Seems like the most obvious solution.

Regardless, does it really make that much difference? You're selling the amp for cheap. The buyer knows he's buying an amp that needs repairs. As long as he knows he's getting the amp in "as-is" condition with no promise of the amp working, why does he care? He's going to have to fix it regardless.

Yes, one channel can work. if SOME of the outputs are "fried", or there are a number of open ballast resistors, the relay will take the bad channel off line, and the amp may work OK in the other channel.

But, the relay is in the output, and if the failures progress, the bad channel may 'finish failing" and take down the whole amp by shorting across the supply. There is no independent disconnection for the channels.

This information comes direct from the EE who designed the original version of that power amp......................
