Ampeg SVT 410 HLN + GK 1001RB

Just picked up a used SVT 410 the other day. I know it is registered for 500W at 4 ohms and the 1001RB can push 700W at 4 ohms. Well, I can turn the volume up to about 9 o'clock before I feel like the speakers are going to explode or something.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a 4/8 ohm switch somewhere on the amp? Are the speakers bad?

Hooking up the head straight to the cab is just fine - no need for an ohm switch. How are you hooking the amp to the cab? What are your tone settings? Basically give us a round up of your knob settings and we can help you from there.

You should be fine. As long as you don't totally push the amp, and you keep your bass nob down, which I see you do, you should be fine. Your ears are your best friend. They'll tell you when you need to turn down.

Remember that on the GK the volume knob sets your preamp gain while the woofer knob is the actual master volume. So if you're adjusting the volume knob you're adjusting the preamp gain. If you're woofer is staying at 12 then that's what you're actually pushing. I run the 1001RB II and an 8x10 and normally have the woofer only at around 10 or 11. Hope this helps...

Ok I think I am starting to get it. I have the -14 db pad pushed in. With it pushed in it seems like I lose a ton of volume.
