Ampeg SVT-7 is pooping out on me! Master only 12:00

Can I fix it or should I return it?

I gigged it the day after I bought it, it was loud! Blew my RH450 out of the water in volume and hifi frequency. We gigged loud and twice the amp cut out on me. I thought, maybe the patch cables... got new cables and it was fine for 2 weeks. Then at a loud rehearsal it did it again. So today I tested it with just a drummer. with gain down, comp off, it just simply goes out when ever I dig in real hard or slap real fast. Even with gain at 11:00 and master at 12:00. My bass is hot but I back it off and use the -15db pad.

I know at least one other TBer had this problem. Thoughts? advice?

What impedance cabinet(s) are you using? 8 ohms, 4 ohms, or some combination?

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question, but I am very interested because I am considering buying an SVT-7 myself. I definitely need to know how robustly they perform with a 4-ohm load.

I have heard the GENERAL criticism that Class D power amps - like the one in the SVT-7 - are more prone to limit/protect/cutting out issues. It seems there might be some truth to that.

The power transformer of my GK2001RB blew, and I had it replaced. Once replaced, I had a similar problem as you. After taking it to a different shop, they told me that the previous tech didn't solder the power terminals very well, so when I really dug in, the amp couldn't push enough current, and so it shut off. Perhaps you have a similar problem.

Hmmm, weak conections limiting current.. could be, they are made overseas.

I am running it at 4ohms, 2 cabs at 8ohms in parallel.

Where do you have the compressor set?

Can your cabs handle 1000W?

Sounds suspect.... unless he MISSED soldering some. That would shut off some of the power 100%.

High resistance connections would get burnt.... or would re-solder themselves..... or both.

Return it. These SVT-7s seem to be having a lot of issues currently. I`d wait for the next gen if you really like the amp.
