Ampeg SVT with 810 still the King !

I was at the Harmony festival yesterday, all the bass players played an SVT. I'm not saying they were sharing one, when one band was done they would tear down, roll out an SVT and the next band would bring their's. All different styles of music, from latin fusion to reggae to roots rock to modern. One thing in common: Killer bass tone !
I guess there is no substitute on a big stage.

Hey, he wants action and he wants it now!

Anyway, that's nice. I like SVT's too.

Clearly, that everyone at a festival likes the venerable SVT means that it is the best. Clearly.

Well the SVT does have a classic tone that is pretty sought after...

That being said, a lot of local bands I've seen roll with similar rigs as well.

Well, they do put out a LOT of volume.

Although I'm surprised to hear that the SVT/810 was so well represented in such varying musical genres.

Maybe the guys on Talk PA decided to strike the backline after each set just to mess with the guys on Talk Bass????

The idea that Ampeg is only good for rock styles was started by 90's dimwits who heard a few bass players crank their SVT's, then decided that was all they were good for. Thanks to the internet giving dimwits an equal voice, somehow this idea has caught on with people who don't know any better than to believe internet dimwits.

You can do any style of music on any equipment, and you should be able to get a good and appropriate sound on any rig. if it doesn't sound good, don't blame the amp.

At the festivals I've played over here in the Seattle and Tacoma areas of Washington, the sound system/stage production team that is hired always brings out the SVT/8x10 big rig for all the bass players to use. It is just the standard. There is also usually a Marshal head/4x12 and often a Fender combo/2x12 for the guitar players. After each band has played they roll around these amps, switching sides or whatever to match the layouts that the bands have submitted in advance. Sometimes there are 5-10 bands playing on a stage in a day, and the amps are all over the stage depending on where the bands need them, so unless the Ampegs in question really looked noticably different in this case (wear, colors, or other identifying factors) then it was probably the same rig. In the clubs I go too around the Seattle area, while I have seen them on occasion, seeing the full Ampeg SVT setup is very rare.

I'm not knocking the SVT/810 setup. I actually play an SVT-CL/810 as my live rig. And (not surprisingly) I play in a rock band.

What I meant was that the SVT/810 rig is not particularly the rig of choice for guys who dig ultra-low or super-bright hi-fi frequency response. And more specifically, the 810 cab wouldn't be my choice for such applications. An SVT head will sound good on just about anything, but the 810 doesn't exactly put out a flat frequency response.

No it doesn't. But there are plenty of Ampeg products out there that do ultra-low and super bright...one of them, the SVT 410HLF, does both in the same cab, even! Honestly, though, I'd just as soon use an 810e for everything I do, since I hate both overhyped low end and tweeter tones.

As do I. I'm not a big fan of tweeters or ports. If I do buy a cab with a tweeter I just roll it all the way off.

About 10 years ago, I had an Ampeg SVT-CL and a matching 810 cab. It sounded pretty good, but not jaw-dropping (tone-wise).

I now have a US Ampeg SVT-VR going into a pair of LDS nEarful 15/6's, and I have to pick my jaw up off the floor every time I hear it! It is a TONE MONSTER and amp GAS killer. Here's a pic:

I played an Ampeg with 810 for the first time in my life yesterday. This thing is a beast. Sounds great...

But i wouldn't want to carry that thing around...
