Ampeg SVT-CL and 810E with Speakon

Sign in to disble this ad
As most of you know, the back of the 810E looks like this:

I've had the same cabinet for a few years, but only in the last two years I started using Speakon cables (with NF4LC connectors) to connect the head and cabinet. I looked at the user manual, but I wanted to make sure I have it plugged in correctly. Some of you have a lot more hands-on expertise with Ampeg than I do..

The amp only has the one Speakon connector so that's pretty straight forward. I have the other end currently plugged into the left (if you were looking at the picture) Neutrik jack. Am I running all eight speakers or am I running four? Is there a better way to be connecting them?

Plug into one or the other and you'll be using all 8 speakers.

Thanks, everyone! I thought they were both mono. Why run four when you can run eight?!

2 ohms. Each cab is 4 ohms and the jacks are wired for parallel.

750w all go. Careful, you can easily blow up your speakers with that.

750 watts will blow an Ampeg 8x10? Really?

Full out it sure can. Most commercial cabs, regardless of what the ratings are, cant really do anything with more than 500 watts of power. They are limited by the excursion of the cones, not how much current the voice coils can handle before melting. Its BS marketing at play, but bigger numbers look good. I dont know of any commercial builder outside of Barefaced Bass that is publishing the specs that actually matter.

It just seems odd to me since I regularly dump 1000 watts into 2 Carvin 4x10s with no issues. Maybe the ratings on my amp are hyped and maybe I am not going full bore 100% of the time, but I am reasonably certain that I am pushing more than 750 watts into those cabs.

You might be surprised as to how little power you are actually using. A big part of it is how you EQ as well. Roll back your lows and you can get louder, as you are not pushing the speakers to their physical limits as much.

Good points. I EQ mid heavy and bass heavy, but never enough to make my speakers fart.

And your Carvin cabs are ported right? So you are already getting a bigger low end than a sealed cab will have. If that isnt understood, and the sealed cab is pushed to get the low end similar to a ported cab, the speakers will be pushed way to hard if the volume is cranked.
