I know it takes alot of volume to overdrive the VR's tubes. DOes anyone have a good clip of this happening??

Bear in mind that many more folks own CLs than VRs as CLs have been around for much longer. It is a natural tendency to vote for what you own, which is the inherent flaw in polls such as these and therefore one might expect the CL to poll higher. Basically if you want an SVT that sounds most like the originals of the 70s get the VR, if you want to get it to distort (I hate that word) early with preamp overdrive, get the CL.

I liked them both, but in the end I went with the CL basically for the gain knob.

I didn't vote because you're not clear on what the criteria are. I have and love my VR. I think they both sound great. I think if you want an amp that can stay clean at high volume or that can overdrive at low volume the CL is the way to go. The gain knob not only lets you get preamp overdrive at lower volumes, but you can lower the gain at higher volumes to keep things clean. With the VR (and vintage SVT's) you're more at the mercy of what volume you need to play at to be heard. I play in a band that is REALLY loud. I have both channels jumpered and my volumes are at about 12 on Ch1 and 10 on Ch2. I can get a nice aggressive clean tone when I play lightly and a REALLY aggressive overdriven tone when I dig in.

I hope that's somewhat helpful. This is just my experience over the last few short months. I'm no expert...
