Question Ampeg SVT classic original vintage tube head

Sign in to disble this ad
Ampeg's site says it's 300 watts @ 2 and 4 ohms.

I'm hesitant to believe amp maker claims on tube amp output wattage.

Don't tube amps burst up over their rated wattage while playing full volume live, eg 340 watts or even higher?

I know a bit about guitar tube amps. Does anyone know if the SVT amp is wired Class A, Class A/B, Class X?

Mine measured about 280 clean back in the day, so it was in the ballpark. It will do more than that if you push it into clipping, and I would expect it to be in the 500-600 range for transients.

The Ampeg SVT, both original and later SLME/Loud Technologies versions deliver a solid 300 watts.

The original SVT changes output transformer taps (from 4 ohms to 2 ohms) when the second cabinet was plugged in (no impedance switch on the back). The SLME and later units have a slide switch to select either 2 or 4 ohm loads.

Class AB.
