Ampeg SVT-II (non-pro) heat problems

Sign in to disble this ad
I've recently started playing through an SVT-II. The first thing I noticed (besides the fantastic tone and related orgasmic what-not) was that the cooling fan is loud as hell. The second thing was that, after a 45 min set, the back grill was too hot to touch. It was racked, but there was a fair amount of clearance and nothing obstructing the side vent.

I'm assuming this means I should replace the fan, which is no big deal. However, after looking in to it, I've noticed that the SVT-II has an 80x38mm fan (usually 20-35CFM) while the SVT-CL has a 120x38mm fan (50-110 CFM, someone on a forum said Ampeg support recommended 60CFM). Thats seems like a huge difference in air movement for roughly the same heat output.

Has anyone else had problems with heat with the SVT-II? I was thinking an easy fix might be to attach a second 80mm output fan to the back grill. Any thoughts?

i wouldn't add one to the amp but one on the back of the rack wouldn't hurt. i wouldn't think it would get so hot it would burn you, though. does it get that hot out of the rack?

i would replace the main fan first. see if it is quieter, then see if it still hot at the back grill.
if it is hot, then try it unracked. if no change, then i would do what jimmy said, add a
fan to the rack, not the amp.

maybe the back grill is supposed to get hot. mine is an '89 model which did
not have a rear grill
