Ampeg SVT II Pro cab advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I just recently bought an Ampeg SVT II Pro, but I don't have a cab for it yet. I'm looking at a couple different ones - Ampeg SVT 610-HLF, Marshall VBC412, Mesa Powerhouse 610..

Do you need a big 810 with these amps? Will it overpower the smaller cabs?

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated..

Have a great day

I play mine though 2 Mesa powerhouse 4x10s. I can also substitute a Mesa 1x15 for one of the 4x10s but I don't really do it very often as I think it causes some frequency issues. Anyway, the SVT2pro is a fantastic head. I like it better than the SVT-CL, but that's my opinion of course. If an 8x10 is too much cab for you, there is nothing wrong with using it with a 6x10 or 4x12. I even use it occasionally with just a single 4x10. It doesn't matter as long as the cabinet is rated at 4 or 8 ohms. There is a switch on the back of the amp for 2 ohm operation, but i have never put mine to the test. I think as long as you are careful with the volume knob, you can play whatever you want through it. Really the only thing that stops me from using it with a single 4x10 most of the time is that I have an svt4pro that is much lighter. so if i'm already playing a gig that only requires one 4x10, then I'm usually using the lighter head. It's never been because i was afraid of overpowering a cab.

Any all tube SVT will sound superb through a Bergantino NV610. Like Packhowitzer over the years I have played mine through 2 4x10s, 1 or 2 1x15s, Ampeg 810 but I have ended up with the Bergantino NV610 for the past four years and couldn't be happier. If you can, at least try this combination - especially in a band situation where it really shines by the way it sits in the mix for you.

I loved my 2 pro through an 810. However, I think nowadays a Berg 610 would be my first choice.

It's also a great way of destroying the 1x15.

Main thing to remember is that the 2-Pro runs at either a 4 or 2 ohm load - so you'll need a cab (or cabs) rated accordingly. I wouldn't run it with a single 15", 2x12, 4x12 or 410 that might be rated at only 8 ohms.

yeah, from me looking around, all the reviews point to the berg nv610, hands down. do these things appear too often around here, craigslist, or ebay? there's a dealer close by and im going to call and see if they have one, but id rather buy used.

NV610 is definitely a good substitute for a full 810.
