ampeg svt III questions

hello,

I recently bought a 2nd hand ampeg svt III, not the pro model but the early 90's model. of course it came without a manual so I need some info on a few features:

- what does the 5 position mid frequency selector do? I read in a review that the first position provides most low end growl, is this correct?

- plate voltage switch? que es?

- 10db slider next to the EQ?

I played a solidstate amp with very basic features prior to this so excuse my ignorance. the major problem I'm having is cutting through the mix. I play in a metal band with 2 guitar players and we're tuned to B. putting a sansamp bass driver in front of it helps, but I prefer playing without any effects. thanks!

For the SVT 3 Non-Pro
The 5 position switch is the frequency selector switch for the midrange knob.. It selects the frequency that the midrange knob will boost or cut.

1. 220hz
2. 440 hz
3. 800 hz
4. 1600 hz
5. 3000kz

The non pro version should not have a plate voltage knob… only Volume, Bass, Midrage, Frequency Selector, Treble..
then the Chiclet buttons for Ultra low/ HI.
BaL out is to send post EQ to the DI out on the back.
EQ in out

The 10db slider will raise the output of the Overall eq and amp output by 10 db..
Some folks find the amp to not have enough gain with only using the VOL control.. so they will engage the EQ and boost the 10 db slider to get extra..
200 watts @ 8ohms
350 @ 4 ohms

Hope that helps

how does the frequency selector work, as when I bought my AMPEG SVT 3 (non pro) it was second hand and had no manual or anything with it. I was led to believe that this was something different.

It's a simple frequency select knob. (see above) The frequency selected is what the mid knob controls.

Cool, thanks for that. What about ohm ratings then,i'm playing more and more shows where i'm leaving my 8 x 10 at home (which is often a blessing) and using other people's gear so far i've managed to get the sound guy to sort it out for me but still not really understood anything about it

Guess i've been lucky not to blow anything up so far!

4 ohms minimum, iow, one 4 ohm cab, or two 8 ohm cabs, nothing else. (like, not two 4 ohm or one 4 one 8)

Thanks, I also recieved some advice somewhere on here that to get the best from my pedals I should use them in line and not through the effects loop. I just started wiring my pedals through the loop and BOOOM what a difference!! It's like the amp has been sleeping since I got it and now it's fully awake!! Thinking of getting a 4 x10 and 1 x 15 cab now to get the best of it.

4x10 and 1x15 is not an ideal setup at all.

+1, as has been stated on TB many times, a 4x10 will outrun a 15 every way there is. Iow, you're limiting yourself to whatever the 15 is capable of, which will hold back the 410. A much better plan is 2x 410's, or 2x 115's. Matching cabs ALWAYS work better.

Check out This Thread, tells you what everything does and how it all works. I had a III-Pro for over a year, and considered flipping it because I could never get exactly the sound I wanted out of it. I read through that thread and learned how to actually set the amp up correctly, and it made a world of difference. Now I want to flip it for a micro-VR...

then I will look at all the bass players using a 15 and 10's set up and laugh as I'm struggling up the stairs with my 8 x 10. don't get me wrong I'm not unhappy with it, I'm just getting lazy and my back is permanently suffering for it!
can't wait to find a flying carpet whilst touring somewhere exotic!

jaff, if you adjust the Frequency Selector with the amps Mid knob near its centered position you wont hear much of a change, but If you boost the Mid knob 3/4 of the way up first, you'll hear a big difference. Then once you find a frequency you like, re-adjust your Mid knob to taste.

You'd find hauling a Bergantino NV610 cab up those stairs much easier.

2x10 + 1x15 can be a nice setup. 4x10 and 1x15 is not, though.

So i recently bought my self a Sans Amp pedal for some extra grunt, but, haven't truly figured out the best way to use it, some people have said it can be used as a di but my pedal only has 1/4" jacks
Also is it best in through the effects loop or in line

You can use it either way, but if you plug your bass into the Sansamp, then the Sans Amp into the effects RETURN, you will bypass the amps preamp and eq, and use the pedal instead. If you run bass to Sans Amp, then pedal to amps main INPUT, you use both the pedals controls, and the amps.
