Ampeg SVT Questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all,

I recently purchased a '74 blackface SVT and have a few questions.

1. The fan is LOUD. Is that normal? Also, would it be ok to disconnect it for a short period of time for recording purposes?

2. The tolex is rough around the edges...how much does it typically cost to recover one of these bad boys? Does it affect the value?

3. I want to get some extra fuses....what type does it use?

4. I have read on the forum that it must have a 4 or 2 ohm load. Why can't I run a 8 ohm load?

Thanks in advance

IMO, only for a very short time

it varies. anywhere from $150-$250. and it usually will affect the value for the worse.

because there's no 8 ohm tap on the output transformer

The amp can technically run an 8 ohm load, it's just not a good idea at all. Ive read about some guys using these amps with an 8 ohm load with no problem, just not a good idea IMO.

listen, forget about the fan. too many people spend time on stuff in the studio that matters very little. fans are one of them imho. if it's really bad, just run a long speaker cable and put the head in another room. but i've found so little of the fan gets picked up when i mic that i don't sweat it.

Read what Jerrold Tiers wrote (#15). Also read what Psycho Bass Guy has said in that thread.
ampeg svt ohm question

I wouldn't use 8 ohms load. Especially if you play loud e.g. on gig.

Yes, some of these fans are loud.

If you disconnect the fan you can get a small room fan and blow it into the back of the amp. These type of fans are quiet and can be effective at cooling the power tubes but you should check to ensure that they aren't getting too hot.
