Ampeg SVT Volume Pot Issue

Sign in to disble this ad
The master volume pot (far right) on my late 80's SVT works just fine at low volumes (1-4 range) but crackles when I turn it above there. It also cuts out entirely as it gets above that range. If I wiggle the knob, then it will come back on, or cut out again. Of course, when I'm playing above the 1-4 range, the low end vibrations are enough to wiggle the knob slightly that it cuts in and out while I'm playing. Or it will stay on, but it makes it sound like I have a blown speaker.

I'm assuming that replacing the pot is needed, but I've never done that before. I've retubed, retolexed, etc SVT's before, but never replaced the pots. Is this something I should try myself? Is replacing pots fairly simple? Or just take it to a tech? Any input is much appreciated.

You can try spraying it with a deoxit type product to clear the oxidation, but I think you still may have to remove the front panel off where the pre-amp is attached to to get clear access to it to the actual pot openings.

If that doesn't work, then look into changing the pot.

Just wanted to let you know that the Deoxit REALLY took care of the issue. A couple of the pots needed some light re-soldering, too.

Between the re-soldering and Deoxit, everything is perfect now!

Deoxit is magic in a can!
