Ampeg SVT4 smoked capacitor advice???

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everybody first post on here. Thanks for any help in advance!! Well at first my amp started to lose power. Still good sound, but had to crank it up louder to get the same volume. Then 1 day it just shut off while I was playing. The fan would spin loudly, then after a few minutes it would turn back on. I work with electronics all day, so I decided to pull it apart today. On initial inspection I noticed a capacitor solder joint was burnt. One of the four large blue caps. I'm guessing this is part of my problem. I can easily replace this, but I wonder if there is something else I should be looking for.. Any help ideas advice?? $$$ is tight like it is for everyone right now. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

I also work with electronics, even design circuits for specialty projects, but I'm NOT an amp tech, and I gather you aren't either. So, a trip to your local tech is the best advice I can give you. They'll have the needed testing equipment, and the "know-how" to diagnois and fix your amp properly.

The cap didn't likely have much to do with it.

Fan on, and amp off for a while means a heat problem. The main filter cap connection to that is fairly remote.....not totally *impossible*, but not the first place to look.

The heat problem can be real, OR it can be a failure of the over-heat detecting circuit.

it could even be a DC problem, either real or due to a problem with the detection circuit. Typically that doesn't put the fan on high, but.....
