Ampeg SVT810AV: good/bad years
A "fridge" is up for sale locally at a fair price (I think).
Seem to remember there are good/bad years of these things (materials used for the cab). How do I determine the age? Seller doesn't know...
And what years should one avoid?
I don't know either, off the top of my head, but I think these threads might help you out.
I'm actually going to be in the market for one too, if I can make room for it!
See if you can get the serial number or any other info on that cab. Pretty sure folks here can be of more assistance if they have more info to go on.
Serial No. from photo in add:
where the x's are smudged out ... My guess at these numbers: 935
Can't seem to find out when the 810av was first introduced...
O is the 5th digit, so 2002, placing it in the "bad years" category of 2000-06. It's not that they were horrible or anything, but the speakers got darker due to a cone change by Eminence and they lost a lot of high end in comparison to years before or since. It will come back with EQ, but I don't think they sound as good. Some like the reduced highs, but I'm not one of them.
I was hoping you might find my post :-)
I've read a good part of what you have written around here for a long time and knew you would have THE definitive answer.
Thanks a lot.
My main rig is in a somewhat different tonal camp (G-K gear) but I am saving up for an "old school" rig, and thought this 810av cab might be my first investment towards this.
The asking price is pretty fair. Armed was this authorative information concerning the year of manufacture (although I don't understand how you got from the serial no. to the year) I will put the squeeze on the seller to lower price a bit more (hoping he is not reading this :-)
I think that the, "dark years", is very subject to individual interpretation. I own a April 2000, and every time I play out, every one says it items plenty bright sounding. But something definitely happened during that time, but your mileage may vary.
