Ampeg Tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an ampeg SVT 4x10 I am trying to sell, and a guy came over today with a fender bassman tube amp, probably 100 watt output. The ampeg was having trouble pumping out low end at 100 watts.

What's up with that? Is there something wrong with the cab or is that Ampegs tone? I read up online that Ampeg's tone is super thick and low, but that is the exact opposite of this cab. It only produces clean highs.

So what is up?

Guy's equipment:
Passive fender bass
Fender bassman tube amp

What model SVT cab is it?

If it's the regular SVT-410HE non ported cabinet, my experience with those is that they need more than a 100 watts to push out any type of decent low end. Frequency response on those is 60Hz-18kHz so you aren't going to get massive lows with those cabinets.

If it's the 410HLF it should get huge bottom even with only 100 watts. If it's the HLF and it sounds thin, I suspect driver issues with the cab.

Keep Low

Is your cab an HLF or HE?
The HLF have a lot more low-bass and its pretty common for 100watt fender tube amps to start distorting and break up on the low notes when you try to play loudly.

It is a SVT-410 Pro. I don't think it is ported, but it does have a horn in the middle. I don't know the age.

I was just so surprised that the cab was farting out with such low wattage.

Dude, I found your cab, seems to be a 90's-era model similar to an HE but with a higher power rating of 600 watt. There's not much info here on TB about your model but I'd say if It sounds good and gets a lot more bass with your 750 big block its probably fine and just wasn't a good pairing with that guys Bassman head.

If memory serves me right, the 410 PRO is an older version of the SVT 410 HE non ported cabinet. Rated 600 watts.

I think the farting was from the Fender head more than the cabinet. Fender tube standard Bassman's could be 50, 70, 100, or 135 watts. Any of which IMO is really not enough to push that cabinet with any type of efficiency.

Ported cabs are more efficient with lower wattage heads, but a 100 watts is still a 100 watts so you can't expect wall crushing lows. However the older Ampeg portaflex sounded real good with a 50 or 100 watt head and I had a SUNN Concert Bass SS head 150 watts and it killed with just a 215 cabinet.

ya, those ampeg 410 cabs can take a pounding. you were hearing distortion from the bassman.
