| I've had a '68 Bassman and currently own a V2. The V2 is a far better choice for bass. It has a lot more headroom plus a fantastic active EQ and input pad of -6dB/-9dB or flat. Plus, it can run 8, 4, and 2 ohms. The 2ohm setting is an awesome feature with a relatively low powered amp. The bassman is 4ohm only.
I use mine on bass all the time. Just last night I was jamming with some friends - my buddy was playing my P-bass with the V2 and an old Traynor 8x10 cab. It sounded fantastic and kept up fine with loud drums and a 4x12 50w guitar amp. I think of it as my mini SVT that I can crank at practice and small gig volume without hurting anyone.
BTW, it just might be the BEST sounding guitar amp I've ever heard. It's not just a smaller V4. The V2 has higher plate voltage and gets a different kind of sizzle in the mids when you crank it up. It can get a ton of gain cranked and has a million tones with the active eq. I can cop Paige Hamilton tones plugging a guitar straight into the V2.
