Ampeg V-2 question

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey, first off is it any good for bass? I'm looking to get that svt grind without all that volume. I have a chance to buy a 73 all original in almost mint condition for $800 CDN.. is that a fair price?

Thanks for your help!

It will break up very early but not in the same brutish way the SVT does, IMO....and the type of cab you are using will have a lot to do with that breakup tone also. The B-25B more closely resembles the SVT tones at the same wattage as the V2.

As for cost....that's pricey for a V2 from what I've seen. I understand mint shape commands a premium but I see them around for $350-400 usually. For that price range I'd be looking at a V4/V4B series head.

That price is definitely high for a V2. Try a V4B or B25B.

The only problem you'll run into with a B25 is the 8/16 ohm specification. The main speaker out is wired for 16 ohms, and with a dummy plug you can use the extension cab jack for 8 ohms (or have the outputs rewired for switching 8 and 16 ohms) but either way the output transformer is not ideal for most modern bass cabs. The V4 has a 2/4/8 ohm switch which makes it extremely flexible in that regard.

Thanks! I thought it was priced quite high but I'm no expert. I'll look into the other suggestions.
