| Ampeg V-4: EQ vs room vs cab?

I just got my '74'ish V-4. I have it hooked up to an Aguilar GS410 cab which I have not used since I moved out here to CA. I used the 410 with my SVT 2 Pro in FL. My old house had nice, thick, wall to wall carpet. The house I'm in now has hardwood floors. The really solid kind - not floating laminate.
So far, I've pretty much just been playing my '66 P with TI flats on it through this rig. With the EQ (on the amp, obviously) set flat, the sound seems to be quite a bit louder or more boomy on the bottom. Say, in a broad range around the low G - A area. With this cab, in my old house, hooked to my SVT 2 Pro, I never noticed this issue.
In order to get the sound more even across the whole range of notes, I have ended up with the amp EQ settings like this:
Bass - 9:00 - 10:00
Mid freq: 1000Hz
Mid - 2:00 - 3:00
Treble 12:00
This seems to me like pretty aggressive boosting of the mids and pretty aggressive cutting of the bass.
So, I'm wondering if this is just the nature of this amp, or is there something I can do to flatten out the sound?
Should I put a thick rug down in front of the cab? Say, 5'x8' or so?
Should I switch to a sealed cab? I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have an 810 flatback (or even settle for a slantback). That seems like just about the perfect cab for a V-4. But, the combo of expense and room required make that a bit less appealing right now.
Is it possible that the amp just needs servicing and possibly some tone caps replaced or something like that? If my local guy can fit me in, I'm taking it in for a tune-up this weekend, regardless.
All thoughts are welcome!
