Ampeg V4 overheating

Sign in to disble this ad
Played my new ampeg V4 today at rehearsal that I just picked up. It's a 1970. Played the amp in a jazz big band and it sounded fantastic for about an hour then something began smoking and now the preamp circutboard has a burned spot and a crack in it. Is there any way to fix this or any idea what would have gone wrong? The amp was hot but not extremely hot. It's been modified for 6550s in the power amp.

IMO, there's no way to tell what happened from your description. pics or a descrption more specific might be helpful.

Well, a burn could be anything, a short, some weak components giving out. The V4 is supposed to get quite warm to say the least. Tech time? If you're close to Johnk_10, he'll fix it up right!

The amp needs to go to a qualified tube tech for some TLC. That's the cheapest (in the long run) and best option.

As Paul would normally say: it's also the safest! Safety first.
