Ampeg V4 w/ SWR cab.. Terrible Combo?
I have a late 70's ampeg V4, distortion model. I've been using it with a SWR goliath 3 (pre-fender) 4x10. Sounds ok, but seemed to be missing the golden tone everyone creams about. Kind of dead sounding. Recently paired with ampeg 410he, sounded amazing. Then with an acoustic 15" cab, again sounded amazing. Way more clarity, mids, the tone I thought I should have been getting and always missed with the SWR.
So...goliath 3s are supposed to be good. They were expensive in their day. I think its just a bad match? The amp sounds moofy and unexpressive even with mids and treb jacked through this thing. Its not an impedance issue. It almost sounds like its running through a lowpass filter. SWR's are supposed to be scoopy, but damn I didn't realize it until trying some other cabs out. Anyone have experience with this/thoughts? I'm definitely gonna try and trade this cab for an ampeg I think. Its like when plugged into another ampeg cab the amp says "Ahhh now I'm home and this is what I really sound like."
I do gig with it and get by, its loud and bassy, but I'm so much happier when a venue has a back lined ampeg cab or similar.
Sidenote: I previously posted about this amp having volume fluctuation and crackling problems.. I think I havnt noticed any of this when paired with a cab other than the SWR. Could the cab be f'd up somehow? All connections seem tight inside, no speaker damage or anything like that.
