Ampeg V4BH and SVT610HLF

Just got this setup and, after reading countless reviews, was expecting to be blown away by the low end; I wasn't. Don't get me wrong - I love the general sound, but thought that it would be much stronger in the sub frequencies. Would adding a 15 or 18 cab help, or just muddy things up?

Well, you can't add anything to the 610 'cause it's a 4 ohm cab, and the V4BH is 8 or 4 ohms. Otoh, the 610hlf is not a cab I'd use with that head. When I had my V4BH, my favorite cab combo was a pair of 8 ohm SVT 15's, but even that isn't going to "blow you away" with the low end. 100 watts is fairly tame, and huge low subs take way more power than that. But, what you have is a great rig, and how it sounds is butter- I'd learn to love that, or look for something entirely different.

+1 on that. The 610HLF isn't all that. I don't know about the head but a 215 cab at 4ohms should work fine.

Saw your other post - do you have the 410HLF or the 610?

Dont be afraid to turn the bass knob up more than on most amps. If you look at the V4BH manual, the setting for 'rock' has the bass knob fully cranked. I run mine at 3'oclock with my swr Goliath III. Also use the mid eq to dial in some low mids. And again don't be afraid to crank those knobs.

Also, I don't know how new your head is or how new the tubes are, but I ran my V4BH for a year and a half before I bought new power tubes, if there is any question of the status of the tubes change them. I had a good bit of low end Added after a re-tube.

Well, you guys were right. I just replaced my head to a SVT4PRO and it has changed everything. All I needed was a little more power and the lows are now amazing. I'm just a little scared of overpowering my speakers.

The SVT4 Pro is a sweet head, but I had all types of issues with mine shutting off due to cold solder joints. Have you had any issues with yours?

Just got it a few days ago. 99% of reviews that I've read are very positive so, hopefully, your case us an exception (sorry!).

I like my V4B, pretty heavy low end for a hundred-watter.

Honestly, if you are mono bridging, don't go insane with the master knob......turn the gain up to about 11:00 or so and then adjust the master....you will LOVE the power!! Don't fear the little red light...means nothing.

I have had mine (4Pro and 6X10HLF) screaming from time to time and haven't blown anything yet....

I've been using the 4Pro since 1994 (I think?) and have never had one problem with it. I would suggest, however, that if you are racking it - go to Wally World (or some other fine establishment) and purchase a small fan that you can run to keep everything cool. Works like a charm for me!

Congrats!!

I used a V4BH with a fliptop 2x15 4 ohm. 300 watt cab.
It killed, great lows, sweet smooth tone.
