Ampeg vintage speaker and SVT 1600?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys, forum rookie comming through

This question is for the ampeg know-it-alls.

I purchased an SVT 1600 + ampeg SVT pro preamp and an vintage 810e cabinet.

The speaker only have one 1/4 " cable connection - so whats the optimal way to connect the cabinet to the power amp? Donīt want to blow the cabinet at first rehearsal

regards.

Usually I'm not in favor of replacing 1/4" jacks with speakons just to replace them, but with such a high wattage power amp, electrical shock is clearly a hazard. So you could replace the 1/4" with a speakon, or you could use speakon to 1/4" speaker cable and just make sure you never plug or unplug with the amp plugged in.

BTW, bear in mind that a lot of those older 810e's only handle 400w and not 800w. You can still use your 1600 if it's a 400w cab, but just watch your volume very carefully. Don't know when they changed to the higher power speakers, but easiest way to tell is to pull a speaker, and if you see a code on it that says "86-032-01," then it handles 800w, otherwise it's 400w.

Even with the amp off?

Cool, thanks. Can i date the old mofo by the serial-number? Im considering to take it back to the shop and finding another 810. there should be a 14 days refund period.

Well you could do it with the amp off.

And yes, you can date it by serial number...the 5th digit should be a letter that corresponds to the year...

A = 1988
B = 1989
C = 1990

etc. etc. But I don't know what year they went to the higher power speakers so it still wouldn't tell you the whole story.
