Amps which are more common on big non-rock stages!

Sign in to disble this ad
What brand of bass amps, is the most commonly seen as backline in Big stages that aren't rock music?

Even if this is totally subjective, maybe this can help to see if bassist of Pop, Gospel, Funk, Jazz, reggae etc.. prefer to go for certain brands!

Pretty much always Ampeg, GK, SWR or Fender around here.

ampeg svt and gk/hartke are the big go-to rental rigs on any stages regardless of genre. for gospel and jazz you'd probably see more gk/hartke. for funk it's probably split or favoring gk/hartke, and in pop and reggae ampeg probably gets used more often. swr and eden also get a fair amount of play as rental rigs in a lot of non-rock settings. but it's amazing how those 4 brands seem to have the backline rental business all sewn up. anything else is impossible to get.

In April I went to a jazz mini-festival at a dance hall type venue and one of the groups had a T.C.Electronic rig. It sounded very nice.

EBS for big clean power but it is more common in Europe than North America. I love the EBS Fafner for it's power and flexibility and used it for my backline when I could take it with me. Big backline is becomng more for show now with the advances in PA subs, arrays, etc. and recording DIs like the Avalon U5 and A-Designs REDDI along with modelng software like Ampeg SVX / StompIO is increasingly being used in live situations. The new ultra compact backline.

I see quite a lot of GK and some Ampeg backlines at Funk and R&B shows. Morris Day & The Time's bassist had dual SVT's and dual 8x10's! I also see a lot of Eden rigs and an occasional SWR rig. Can't say I've seen any Hartkes.

I've seen two Hartke rigs for outdoor festivals. Seen several Ampeg fridge's but nothing smaller. Seen SWR and GK.

On the other hand, the sound companies providing the backlines are there to make a profit. They probably purchased these same amps 10 or more years ago and have not updated them (cuts into their profit) except by necessity. I take my Shuttle with me when I play outdoor festivals. The soundmen have zero problems unplugging from one amp into another - takes about ten seconds. I don't care what kind/brand/size speaker cabs they provide, because the audience won't hear that anyway.

But That's my point, how much are bassist pleased in this regard?

I mean, e.g. if a guitar player plays pop, i bet he would prefer the clean sound of a Vox AC30 instead of Marshal JCM say..

But I think you should be in a Pro band so you can have that standard of requirement..

Aguilar is fairly popular.

I think the most popular has to be an IEM system.Almost required in any genre any more these days.

I might throw in Eden as well, but I agree.

It's not a question of "right" or "wrong". It's a matter of personal taste...

For smooth jazz/R&B I usually see SWR or Eden on the riders. Almost every stage I have played on in the last year there's an SWR 410 cab

I really only see a couple of things lately around here when it comes to the country/red dirt shows that I've been involved with:

1) Ampeg SVT
2) Aguilar

Last weekend I had a smile on my face because the bass player was toting a Mesa MPulse 600 and Powerhouse 6x10, which is the rig I'm probably going for. Got the head already but still deciding on cabinets....
