Another 1-10 Build: Sundogue Lite

Earlier this year I was looking for a way to make a Peavey TWV210 cab easier to haul around as I live on a hillside and can't store it near my car for gigging. Digging around the various TB forums I found this:

110/6 DIY cabs

and thought it would fit my needs perfectly. Except that I use a GK400RB and not a fully biamped rig like Sundogue. I PM'd him and he graciously gave me some pointers for the build so I wound up finally finishing these just in time for an Allman Bros tribute gig I was subbing for. I've since gigged with these in my RnB band. Oh, I mostly play a '75 PBass w/chrome flats through this rig.

They're built pretty much identically to Sundogue's, namely 1/2" birch plywood w/minimal/strategic bracing along the lines of fEARFUL. I put a lid on the very handy rolling storage box bottom and added extra bracing to make sure it wouldn't affect the spkr cabinet bass response. The finish is brushed, then sanded, then sprayed Rustoleum Satin Black, a finish I've used in the past that's durable. But I would not recommend it as it's pretty toxic stuff, so will have to try the duratex next time around.

I must say I really appreciate the modularity and portability of this sort of rig, no cabinet weighs over 25 lbs (that's about 10 kg using civilized units of measurement ). Easy to take apart and throw in my 20 y/o Toyota station wagon, then clamp together and roll up to the foot of the stage, turn it around, then tilt the whole thing back using the built in handle on the amp case and large 4" rollers on the back of the storage box like a hand cart et voila, up the stairs to the stage.

The sound? Now that the speakers are closer to my ear I don't have to turn the rig up as loud and my band mates can hear me much better. The speakers themselves aren't half bad but I can see trying out some Eminence S2010s in the not too distant future. The cabinets are 1.5 cu ft and tuned to about 55 Hz using 4" diameter 1/4" thick cardboard tubing. I've let a few other bassists play through this rig and now one of them wants me to build him a 12" version with a larger amp. My next build will be a fEARFUL 12 sub (X2) in the same rackwide format as these for the larger gigs as this one is fine for smaller ones in bars and such, 200 watts and 2-10s can only get you so far (I didn't use the horn from the PV cab, don't care for the sound).

Thanks to Sundogue, plus BFM, Greenboy, and Duke for all their postings, have learned much from them and a few others here as well, this is a very nice community and the knowledge and experience freely shared here is much appreciated

Cool. Of course, I'm a tad biased.

Thanks for the credit, but honestly anything I learned about cab building was from TB, so I'm standing on the shoulders of men far more knowledgeable than I (hope I'm not too heavy and causing too much pain for y'all).

I like modular rigs. Anything that makes the load-in/out easier.

Hmm I like the way those cabs look for sure! good job on the build too
But I was thinking, that could I use just one of those cabs with a small mini amp-head such as the GK MB200? I am looking forward to build a cab much like what you made or then something akin more towards fEARFUL.

thanks

Yes, I've done some smaller coffee house like gigs using just one of the speaker cabs and the 400RB and it was more than sufficient, very easy tote, too. Have run my upright through it as well w/equally good results.

I would suggest more efficient speakers than the Peavey's, though, like the Eminence I mentioned. This cab size and tuning would be good for those drivers based on the WinISD calc's I ran.

A fEARFUL 12/6 w/the MB500 would be a great way to go for larger gigs, too. Looking forward to a 12/12/6headcase build in the fall once I'm done making a couple of these for some folks.

Thank YOU We're both the same age so the light weight and modularity matter a lot. Plus this rig sounds pretty darned good
