Thats the horn. It haas several triangle ports inside the grill beside the speakers though. I think you'll be really happy with this cab!

Wow. Those are some appealing looking cabs. Im gonna try to find some demos of those. So the large hole is the tweeter and the several triangles are the ports?

It sucks that every bass/cab demo is funk/slap bass stuff. Dont get me wrong, that stuff sounds good in its own regards but itd be nice to hear something that wasnt so funky. I wanna hear how this stuff sounds in heavy rock or metal! So far, for my sound, i havent heard any of these other cabs beat it. Ill admit that alot of these cabs ive checked out have probably a better mid tone than some of the ampeg HLFs, but im not playin in tht area most of the time. I do some slap riffs once in a while in my metal songs but it seems like alot of the cabs like berg and mesa are mainly for mid range bassists. It looks like ampeg has cabs that have lower lows and higher highs, but they dont have as much mid. Maybe just run the svt 410hlf with a mesa ph412 or a berg. Then maybe you can get the full range. Idk...

Not by a long shot - I've owned 3 SVT-410HLFs, and my Mesa cabs have all been stronger in the lows than ANY Ampeg I've ever owned or played... Mesa also generally has "higher highs", too... I'd say you really need to check out some different cabs to form your own opinion, though...

Mixing completely different cabs is a total crapshoot as to whether it'll work or not, but it can work better if you have different heads to power them and try to get completely different tones out of them. Too much work for me, though.

I think you're right to a certain extent about the HLF cabs. But regarding these demos you see...

As a working pro most of my life, I've had to use a variety of different gear for various reasons. Sometimes I was sitting in on someone else's bass and amp, sometimes the promoter ignored my SVT/810 request, sometimes there just wasn't anything else available except a rig I didn't like. But every time I've had to use something that wasn't to my liking, I did my best to make it sound to my liking as I could. In the end, I still sounded like myself and so did everyone else in the band. And so do the people doing these demos. People set their gear according to their likes and dislikes. And unless they give you a whole bunch of different settings, they're giving you their take on a particular piece of gear.

I think online demos are cool if they're thorough, and they can help you put together a short list of stuff to try out, but you're hearing the sounds that THEY like out of the rigs they're demoing.

@jimmym
Yeah, that sounds about right. Most of those demos just showcase the mid range tone of an amp or cab. I dont think ive ever heard them say, "now check this out as i scoop the mids and boost the bass. Check out the deepness of that bass tone." They do always refer to the rich bass tone or whatever but they never actually show how each freq range sounds individually. I still want to check out one of those mesas that georgestrings keeps pushin. Lol. There must be somethin good about em, he loves them so much tht on just about every bass amp thread hes right there promoting them. Haha. They do boast high quality parts and hand made craftsmanship so ill definitely have to dig deeper. I really like my ampegs and would consider myself a big fan, but if i find something that suits me better and it doesnt say ampeg on it, well, id have to cross over until i find another brand thats more suitable.

I really don't mean to come across as a Mesa shill, and I'm openly critical of some of their lesser products like the PH1000 and 1200, and M-2000 amp, for example... I've been gigging primarily Mesa for about the last 6 years or so, and truth is for the hard rock and metal I mostly play, I haven't played anything better... I'm fortunate enough to be able to play through pretty much anything I want - if there was something better for me, I'd have it...

None of that is to say that I'm an Ampeg hater - I LOVE their all tube amps, and have owned atleast 3 or more of both the SVT-410HLF and SVT810e - in all, probably close to 10 Ampeg cabs...

IME/IMO, if you like the depth that the SVT-410HLF provides, but just want "more" of everything it has to offer, you won't get that from another Ampeg product - you'll have to go Mesa, Genz-Benz Uber series, SWR Goliath series, fEARful, or one of the other custom cabs... This is coming from somone who plays in loud bands, and goes for a ton of low end, yet good upper end clarity - without sounding too mid scooped...

Anyways, good luck in your search - I hope you find what you're looking for

I agree. Again, in direct comparison to my older ampeg 810e, my Mesa cabs are way better suited for me, and I'm playing heavy stuff in drop A. I find that the Mesa is much more even across the whole frequency range if that makes sense. I run my rig with my tweeters off and still have tons of high end, don't run too much of a bass boost but still have lots of bass. My best gear purchase to date was my PH412 and I'll take this thing to the grave with me.

I wish you were close by so you could run your rig through my cabs, I really think you'd be sold.

Fwiw - The Acacia Strains bassist runs a Mesa PH810 and they're lower then A. These Mesa cabs are the sh!t, man.

Yeah, ive been hearing good stuff about those mesas. Nothing bad except those weird cabs like the 410 with the 115 in the middle. John campbell from lamb of god makes it sound like $h¡t though.

Does anyone know of any good videos showcasing mesa ph610 or ph810 in metal? Also, is the 810 the same tonally as the 610 just bigger and louder?
