ANOTHER AMPEG 810 QUESTION!

Sign in to disble this ad
Opps i put this over in the wrong forum by mistake..lets try where it belongs!
I have been going back and fourth with cab options...i was thinking of picking up possibly a Genz Benz GB810T-XB3 or maybe a Mesa Boogie...but both are pretty sucking expensive. you can get used ampeg 8x10s all over the place pretty cheap...actually you can get new ones fairly cheap also if you look around (i should have bought one the last time they were on sale on amazon!)The questions is i just want old school low thumpy bass, would i be able to get this kind of tone out of a sealed ampeg cab...or would i just be wasting my money? thanks
PS Anybody know how they sound compared to a Epifani UL2 410?

Ampeg has been the industry standard for years. If you just want good "old school low thumpy bass" then you CAN'T go wrong. The only few I'd would ever play other than Ampeg is Mesa, Aguilar, and Warwicks amplification is pretty awesome too. Good luck with your purchase dude, new gear is always fun!

Ampeg is the industry standard for a reason. Actually, for many of them. Yes, you can get the old-school, thumpy bass from a sealed cab - and you won't get it from a ported cab. Ported cabs get a little boomy, rather than having that tightly controlled thump. That quintessential thump that everyone hears in their head is a P Bass with LaBella 1954 Originals (0760M) with foam mutes through an SVT into an 810e. If you want "old school thump," there's your formula.

Jimmy M will jump in however before he does I would say an Ampeg 810 sounds better than the two other cabs you mentioned. The sealed character of this cab makes it fit in the mix perfectly.

I have a lot of respect for what Mesa does and their customer service is legendary, that being said when I test drove their 810 or 215 I find them too aggressive for my taste. I kind of hear them as heavy metal cabs and that's what many people are using the for.

I have not heard the Genz Benz but an Ampeg will do what you are looking for and there are plenty of budget used cabs available. Make sure you check Guitar Center for this they somethimes have prices that will be lower than many Craiglist postings.

Check out two 210 VR cabs as well; it give you most of the tone of the Ampeg 810 with great transportability and flexibility.
