another ohm question

Sign in to disble this ad
i bought 2 peavey 1520 cabs for 100.00. one cab is mint and sounds great. cab. #2 was in bad shape and the crossover was gone. i cut it in half, made it into 2 cabinets. added new handles, corners, speaker grills and striped it down to bare wood. looks cool. here's my dilema. the 18 is 4 ohms. the 2 10's are rated at 8 ohms each. they are wired in parallel. if i wire them in series, will it make them 4 ohms. i'm running a peavey max 700 head. i want to run the speaker outs(2) as one to each cabinet. any help would be appreciated. i've been on the 4 strings for over 30 years and i'm still an ohm dork. thanks

If you run both out you will be 2 ohm to the head. If your head can go to 2 ohm then perfect. If you run an 8 and 4 no good cause power isn't deliveted equal plus you will b under 4 still.

If you parallel everything, You'll have a 2 ohm load. If you want an 8 ohm load, put the two tens in parallel (which makes them 4 ohm total load), and then put THAT in series with the 18.

However, it's not clear to me exactly what you're trying to accomplish. If you are running the two cabinets on separate channels of the amp (which if I remember correctly the Max series amps can do), you might not have to worry about matching their impedance.

If that's not clear as mud, read this thread.

Series impedance: ZTotal=Z1+Z2+...Zn
Parallel impedance: ZTotal=1/([1/Z1]+[1/Z2]+...[1/Zn])

4 Ohms in series with (8 Ohms in parallel with 8 Ohms) is 8 Ohms.
