Another question about a 6.0/Avatar B212 matchup

Sign in to disble this ad
I mentioned in this thread that I am planning to pull the trigger on an Avatar B212 I found atr a decent price.

Seeing as how I am planning to run this on a 6.0.. which runs at 375W @ 8 ohms and that is a 500W rated ca.. would I be putting too much strain on my amp with tat matchup. or could I cause too much heat in the speaker coils and eventually damage them?

I've ran this setup for about a year (my B212 is 4 ohms, I'm assuming the one you're talking about is as well) without a problem. You're not going to be pushing the full 600 watts unless the volume is cranked, so the cab will be ok. You probably won't even need to take it up past half way in most circumstances.

Its always better to have more wattage in the the amp then the cab. There are a few posts regarding this and I remember one cab maker had it on their website. You don't want to overdo it but 20% over or so and I wouldn't worry about it. I imagine 600watt amp pushing a 500watt cab would be about perfect. You want that headroom.

BUT if you continually have your shuttle on max volume then its not the cab needing a change; its the whole rig.

Looks like you are going with an 8-ohm cab, so you will be putting 375 watts into the 212, correct?

If so, you won't have any problems as long as you use common sense. The limiter in the Shuttle series should prevent you from doing to much damage, the light starts going off on the limiter when you are still about 6db away from clipping the power amp. As long as that light isn't flashing with every note you play, you won't send a clipped signal to the cab. As long as you don't expect miracles from your cab (most 2x12s, while loud, will not get as loud as an equally created 4x10) there won't be any problems.

Don't get overly worked up over manufacturer's specs. They aren't always 100% accurate anyways. Now, if you were putting a cranked-up 2,000-watt amp into the Avatar, that might be an issue. But, as long as you are reasonably close, in either direction, with the power ratings of your amp and cab(s) and use common sense, you shouldn't have any problems at all.
