Red face ANOTHER Wattage Ohm question

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok guys, I've looked at the FAQs and various other threads, and not found and answer that helps. I'm pretty much 100% certain that this will have been covered before and if anyone can either point the way to an answer or just answer direct, that'd be awesome.

So:

I'm looking to get an AMPEG SVT 3 PRO head (RMS @ 8ohm = 275W / RMS @ 4ohm = 450W)

The deal i'm looking at has the AMPEG B-410HE cab, which handles 200W RMS @ 8ohm.

Now, my first query, is this going to work? (Obviously, i assume it will, as it's coming from a reputable music store) But, am i going to be underpowering the amp?

Secondly, will i be left feeling disappointed when i try and crank the amp and it plain doesn't make enough noise?

It's more expensive, but I might look at the AMPEG SVT-410HE (RMS handling 500W @ 8ohm) or, should i really just look at a 4ohm cabinet?

Many, many thanks for anyone who can simply answer my questions

Well you have slightly more power in the amp which is good, but you might want to pair it up with a 2nd cab.

I just did some research about ohms and resistance the other day. The AMPEG head is rated down to 4ohms and 450 W. So when looking at the AMPEG cab being rated at 8ohms and 200W the head is able to handle much more. You could wire 2 of the B419HE cabs in a parallel circuit but there are many unknown factors from my point of view. Here is an article that should help some. I don't own anything like this so it is just theory to me at this point.

Yeah, i understand that's good.

But I want to be running it with the 450W from the amp, so a cabinet capable of handling more than 450W at 4ohms is what i need, correct?

Thanks

If you want the full 450 watts then you need to run 4ohms yes, which means either 2 8ogm cabs or the 4ohm cab with higher wattage.
