Any drawbacks to my plan??

So I think Im gonna indulge in a little Ampeg goodness. Ive never owned a 'peg before, so I think I should give it a whirl.

I was gonna go with a SVP Pro Pre and Crest CA Power amp, 450 watts that the 3 Pro produces isnt always gonna cut it for me. After reading some reviews of the pre that described some noise (which is curiously missing from the SVT-3) Ive decided to go a bit of an unconventional route.

Gonna get a 3-Pro, run the Pre amp signal out of it bypassing the power section and amplify it with the powersection of a Hartke LH 1000. Reasons:

1. Same tone, lots more power.

2. Apart from each other both amps are still useable. But a pre and power amp when separated become basically useless.

3. Two heads better than one? If one breaks down I can always use the other one.

4. Weight is the only forseable downside.. but it doesnt bother me.

Sounds like a capital idea. I advocate having a backup for everything. As long as they both sitting there, why not run half of one into half of the other one.

You have a 60lb head for a backup. Go buy a PF-500 and call it good.

The 3 PRO has a decent amount of tube growl from the driver tubes and this sound will NOT be present in the pre-amp out signal of the head. You will get a clean tube signal though.

The SVP-PRO has that flavor of tube growl. From what I have read on here, the SVP-PRO's hiss factor was negated with decent tubes installed.

The 3 PRO is plenty loud through the right cabinet and the Hartke LH1000 can kick butt too.

Just some food for thought.

thanks i didnt realize all tube stages wouldnt be in effect come off the line out. sounds like my plan was foiled....
maybe it will be a crest after all. just a thought: maybe a svp pro with signal feeding lh 1000 would be a good comprimise.. still have a little versatility in tones. i like the lh 1000 had one very powerfuul just wasnt nearly enough tone shaping.

The SVP-PRO into the LH1000 is not a bad idea, if the pre-amp goes bad, you still have the LH1000. With a two channel power amp, usually on channel goes bad and the other keeps going. Always could get two pre-amps.

I used to think just like you in many ways.....I now have lighter amp heads and speakers; love it. I used to have a rack mount setup too and that got old fast. By all means, lug it around and enjoy yourself.
