Any LDS Low Down Sound 3x10 Users?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys, I'm curious if any of you TBers out there have experience with Don's 3x10s. I'm sure they're great but I've never played through a 3x10 and it sounds like a neat approach to a cab. I have an LDS 15/6.5 and have been pairing it with my Avatar B210Neo. The two cabs together just kill but I'd like to sell the Avatar for a matching LDS 3x10 (black tolex, Fender grill cloth)...possibly with the same dimensions as the 15/6 shorty cab.

I'm looking for a small, stand alone cab that I can one hand to gigs and when needed, stack on top of the 15/6. What do you guys think about his 3x10s?

Much appreciated.

forget about it. if you want to use it both as standalone for smaller to medium gigs and stacked on top of the 15/6 on larger gigs, go for fearful 12/6 cube, nothing else than that.

Really huh? I ask cause I get such a great tone and attack when I have my 210 stacked on top of the 15/6 that I figured a 310 might just give me similar results but with an extra ten. Clearly, I'm no engineer, so I'm making a judgemnt based on my exeperience of stacking the cabs that way. Not crazy about 12s (I've owned Shcroeder 212s and Avatar 212s)...they're great - kinda wooley as stand alones - so I prefer the ten inch speakers. I guess my question is, is a 3x10 a good call as a smaller-than-a-410 stand alone and a bigger-than-a-210 stackable cab? Anybody doing that?

When there's a midrange driver on the top end, any even decent generalizations you could make about the "tone" of 12s vs. 15s vs. 10s is meaningless.

Get a 12/6 cube or 15/6 reverse baffle. Seriously pointless to be mixing 10s with these kind of cabs.

A 310 does make a good stand alone cabinet , mine is loud enough for about any gig I do .Mine is a Dr Bass 310 but it's probably pretty close to what Don would build .

I had an eFearful 12/6/1/ I built to Greenboys specs and I did try it with my 310 cab but they really didn't mix that well for me when I tried stacking them . My 310 has more bite with its lower crossed over horn and the Deltalite tens compared with the deep smooth sound of the fEarful . Two different animals . Like the other guys say , stack the 15/6.5 with another cab with the same mid driver , Don can build one that will stack so the mids are vertical to each other if you need more volume . Here's a pic of my three way cabs with the drivers lined up although they are not fEarfuls .

If you just want another standalone cabinet that's different than the 15/6.5 the 310 would be a cool choice but I don't think they mix very well .

Should note that the Passinwind 12/6 crossover you modeled yours on (if I'm not mistaken) is voiced a lot different than my designs which are a lot more aggressive anywhere near the transition, while Charlie's design is more about the voicing you describe. Also, his crossover design was for the 18 Sound mid driver and not the Eminence Alpha6A which is incredibly different and really unsuited to that crossover.

But still, not the best leveraging of a dedicated mid driver, to throw it in a stack with woofer-only cabs.

I've got one of Dons two tens loaded with B & C drivers and it kills. I suspect a 210 or 310 might be a good match for a couple of reasons.

1) It's going to give you a couple of different flavors at smaller gigs. The 15/6 covers old school real well and the 310 will give you some Marcus sizzle if you want.

2) I find that sometimes mix/matching cabs or even heads sometimes makes for great combos. For instance a big wider sounding head will sometimes sound better with a tight punchy cab. I suspect that two different type cabs could give you the best of both worlds.

The only issue with a 310 will be impedance. The 310 will likely be 5.3 ohms or some other odd match, so you might want to check if your head can drive the mis-matched cabs. Your also going to need a calculator to figure out what your impedance is when your running them together.
