Any opinions on the Univox U-1061

I bought a U-1061 off ebay for 400.00 with new tubes and a check up. I have played one some time ago and I thought it sounded good. I talked with someone who said that they're cheap P's O ****. That was a couple years ago and I don't think they look cheap, the transformers are huge.
But, I talked with an amp tech who said They made mediocre guitar amps but much better bass amps. He blamed the hate on the fact the company made lawsuit Japanese made guitars, have a lot of clean headroom, and we're cheesy looking at the time. Plus everybody was into SVT's
I'm not a tube amp nut or anything, but I do like the way tube amps cut through the mix. I can't help to remember in the 80's when Orange amps were cheap ugly ****** amps.

What the hell, For 400 bucks, a handwired 100 watt tube amp from the early 70's can't be that bad. Some of these less popular amps sound great through the newer sophisticated cabs. What do you guys think? boat anchor, okay amp, or underrated beast?

Univox imported Marshall for a long time.

Many of the Univox amps (yours included.. ) were simply marshalls circuits that were wired up in America. Expect it to be a Marshall Superbass copy, for a fraction of the price.

IIRC the 1061 was a very close copy of the Superbass/Superlead, but its been awhile since i looked at the schematic.

Either way, not bad.

I had a Univox piggyback solid state amp (bought new around 1972) and loved the tone. I also had an early '70s Univox "Naked" Bass (their P Bass copy) with a great neck.
Nothing silly about Univox gear.

It's their earlier guitars which are really the junk - they are really just rebranded Teisco's. Ick!

But their later Matsu made gear is superb.
