Anybody use a preamp as a direct box?

Hey all, I play in venues where we run everything through the monitors, no amps . . . . just ear buds.

I'm thinking of getting a Yamaha PB-1 bass preamp to use as my direct box.

I don't suppose there would be an issue but love to hear some comments from those in the same predicament.

I use an FMR RNP (Really Nice Pre-amp), which is massive overkill as a direct box - I bought it because it's got two killer mic pres - but it's such a great guitar/bass DI that I never saw much point in getting something else.

I use the tube fed DI on my Kern preamp all the time...whether I'm using the power amp or not.

I've used both my Aguilar ToneHammer and my Fishman Plat-Pro as standalone DIs (not at the same time, you understand ...). Each worked very well.

di

For the 3 years I played without a stage amp and inears (still use inears) the best di sound came from an old peavey preamp that I still have. The di had a speaker sim which I dissabled because it sounded like crap. When you have a good eq section, you can really get a good sound easier in different rooms than just relying on the 3 band on most boards. That old peavey actually worked out better for me than the mike pope rackmount I had. I never would have believed that!

Mind you, I was talking about recording purposes here, where I can dial effects and EQ in on the computer...

I've used my VT Deluxe and the pres on my heads as DI's. I greatly prefer a mic, though.

I use my Ampeg SVP-CL or SVP-Pro all the time as my preamp and DI feed. It sounds awesome. I'll probably use it for recording too unless I get a REDDI before then

I use the post-eq DI on my Peavey PRO500 a lot of the time. Sounds great.
