Anyone familiar with vintage EMC amps?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an EMC* B250 bass combo made in 1972 or '73 that is missing the 15 inch speaker. I have no idea what impedance speaker it would take. Probably 8 ohms, but I need to be sure. The amp does work. The guy I bought it from hooked it up to an external speaker (8 ohms) but that was just for a brief low volume test, just so I could hear the amp produce sound.

Is there any method of determining what ohms the speaker needs to be without spending $15 for the schematic download?

I do have a digital volt/ohms meter.

* Electronics Music Corporation - a somewhat obscure Cleveland Ohio company

Thanks

No. Since SS amps are at risk when the load is too low go 8 ohms.

Pay the darn $15 for the schematic. That's a cheap price to pay.

I can't answer your question but thanks for the trip down memory lane. Our old band, way back when, had EMC cab/amp stacks. My cab had 2x15s, the keyboard had twelves and the guitar tens, as I recall.

I agree it's worth investing $15 for the info.

Cool. Did you get an EMC endorsement or something?

I just updated the power cord on this amp to 3 prong. Followed instructions for converting old Fender amps. The EMC wasn't identical, but almost so. It was fairly easy, although time consuming (I'm not fast when it comes to soldering and running wires). Took out the "death cap" and all.

I wanted it "modernized" for safety, and I just wanted the experience of doing the coversion - never did it before. I'm probably going to loan the amp to my church for the youth music program and didn't feel good about the old ungrounded power cord. I've just started teaching a teen at church bass guitar, and there's no bass amp unless I lug my stuff over there.

Its a decent enough amp, just really old school. Volume, Treble, Bass, Middle are the controls, plus some Bright switches. No vast array of knobs. Doesn't sound half bad really, plugged into an Eden 1X15 cab. I'm going to look at an old CTS 15" for it today. Its cheap enough if its in good shape, and probably close to what the amp came with in the first place. And it might last a couple of months before the kids blow the speaker.
