Anyone use a Dynaco MK-III tube amp for bass?

Anyone use a Dynaco MK-III mono-block tube amp for bass? Famous in their day (late 50s & 60s) for Hi-Fi. Uses the same 12AX7 and KT88/6550 tubes as the infamous SVT but is only 60/100W Vs 300W for the SVT.

I recall trying one- not much power, but basically a bassman power amp. They could be upgraded with better caps & resistors, etc..

Sure, that's exactly what the early Sunn amps were (200S,etc). Sunn bought transformers and boards from Dynaco and started their business using them.

And while they used KT88's like Ampeg's SVT, the drive circuitry and output transformer topology (SVT was not ultralinear) were completely different.

Find a cheap tube preamp, plug it into your MKIII, and go for it!

I've got a Dynakit ST70 (35w /channel stereo) that I use for my Hi-Fi system. I wouldn't play bass through it, but is is a sweet, very musical and smooth Hi-fi amp. And they can be modded and hot rodded to be real high end amps.

Good stuff.

I actually used TWO Dynaco MK-III monoblocks for a rig once.

They were my main home stereo amps, and I desperately needed something to use last minute.

They're about 60W RMS, 120W peak... if they were bass amps they probably be rated as 100W. Two of 'em each driving a 2x10 got reasonably loud though.

Around '74, I tried the same thing with a pair of Quad monoblocks. Two KT66's in each, rated conservatively at 15 watts a side. All I had to drive it, was the Quad hi-fi preamp. Not much gain, and not enough EQ for the small single 15 cabs I was using at the time, and a P-bass with Labella flats.

It sounded OK for small jazz trios, but it wasn't exactly a rock powerhouse...

Triode Electronics sells a nice cap upgrade board for the Dynaco MK III (SDS Labs Mk3 Capacitor Board, Blank with instructions). Well worth using if you are going to use the amp for bass.

Yep, you can put KT88s in your SVT. Excellent 6550 Vs KT88 info & details right here:

6550 vs KT88

My two MK-IIIs were built by my Dad in 1959 and used in a period "Hi-Fi" system with AR-2s, Calrad 3-element electrostatics, a Heathkit pre-amp and a belt-drive turntable (remember those?) with a platter that weighed about 20 Lbs! Had to move the belt for different speeds if I remember right, very cool.... Someone's description of the MK-III as a "Bassman power amp" is right on!

Well... there is a lot of difference between a 15watt Quad 2 and Dynaco MK-III.

The Quad was 15W RMS, class A

The Dynaco was 60W RMS, Class AB ultralinear

The earliest SVT's had a weird 6146 tube and later went to 6550's. KT88's are very similar to 6550's and can be used interchangeably in most circuits.

Just as some people put 6550's in Ampeg V-4 in lieu of 7027A, some guys put KT88's in the SVT
