Anyone using Yamaha power amps?

Sign in to disble this ad
Did a search, but I'm not seeing much love for the P-series Yamaha PA amps on here. Given how popular Crown, Peavey, and Carvin lightweight power amps are I'm surprised I don't see more folks with the Yamahas. Heck, I've seen way more folks lugging around the old Crest CA- series stuff than using these. Attractive price, good feature set, lots of power, quiet fans... I'm really surprised these seem to be so unpopular. Is there something going on with them I'm not seeing that makes them less desirable?

I have. The were pretty good, nothing too impressive though. I think the reason why they are not that popular is because most of the people that use them upgrade to something else sooner or later.

Interesting. What is it they lack that causes people to upgrade to something else? Just curious, I'm trying to understand.

Anyone? I have a chance to buy a P7000s for a good price for a limited time. I see some people on pro audio forums saying they aren't great for use with subs and bass heavy content.

I don't think Yamaha amps have any real deficiencies. I don't think they're marketed very effectively in the US. From what I've seen, they seem to be quite popular in Germany and Austria for some reason.

I had one back about 8 years ago and only sold it because it wasn't powerful enough. I thought it sounded fine.

Used one for........omg 22 years! Never a hickup, always sounded great. Sits in waiting if one of the new lightwieghts goes belly up. Just heavy as $$$$.

Thanks Bob, that's good to hear. This includes the P####s series right? I think they're newer than the old classics people seem to be really fond of.

I have no experience with Yamaha power amps, but my experience with Yamaha has been that they are consistently decent musical gear. I've owned a bass amp, acoustic guitars, effects pedals, and my trombone back in high school...

It may not be Crown, or Martin, or _________, but Yamaha gear IME is remarkably consistently built. Their starter acoustics are great.

I'd guess you'd be just fine.

I've had a P2250 since the 1990s, and I've used it pretty regularly since then (for bass and PA originally, more recently for rehearsal PA and studio monitoring).

At ~42 lbs for 500 watts bridged, it's long been replaced in my gigging rigs by lighter gear. Still, to speak to your question about the brand, it's always sounded good and worked without a hiccup for about 20 years. (There's something to be said for that level of reliability!)
