and not just in the dress sence

i rolled into a rehersal studio with my band carrying my fender bassman 50. walk up to the desk to ask what room were in. the 1st words out of his mouth were JESUS THATS A F**KING OLD AMP. my reply was "its only 38 years old" his following question was "and how old are you" "19"

after that he asked as i was walking down the corridor "oi, we only use speakon leads here. do you have regular jack to jack speeker leads for that grandfather clock"

my reply was "old men like me always come prepared"

dunno if this should go under humour or amps

so do any of you play "grandfather clocks" and other asorted antiques

Ah, young people and their "I know everything because I'm better educated than you and grew up with the internet and MP3's" attitude.

Should've just looked at him sadly and said "Wow. Really? You don't know?...." and just walked away. Young, hip people HATE thinking or feeling that they are missing out on the latest news. It's like throwing a piece of garlic on a vampire's back that he just can't reach. It burns slowly and they will claw themselves to death trying to get it out...b/c if their friends see them not responding, they will instantly be uncool.

Or, you could just whack him upside the head with the amp. But that's not socially acceptable behavior. Ironically, back in the day when that WAS acceptable, nobody would say anything that bad to piss you off. Now that it's not acceptable behavior, lots of folks just beg for an ass whooping every time they open their traps.

OK, I feel better now. Hope you do too, s_mcsleazy.

A lot of us consider "vintage gear" very cool. It also can be worth a bundle if it's in good condition

Not quite the same.

A few years ago we supported a newly signed band just before they went to record. I was playing a beat up 62 P through a circa 1969 100w tube lead head and a single lead 4 X 12 cab. Not much bottom on it but the mids and highs were fantastic. Their bassist had a Trace Elliot stack, 300w head, 4 X 10 + 1 X 15 cabs and a Precision Lyte bass, all brand new on an advance from the record company. He looked down his nose at my 60's gear.

After the sound check he came over to ask what my secret was, why mine sounded so much better than his. I lied and said I did not know. In truth it was because I had been playing mine for 30 years and knew how to get the best out of it. He had only bought his 3 days before, could only just play, and their songs were rubbish (IMHO).

I would have loved to have had a go through his gear but resisted the temptation to ask. I have never heard of the band since that night so maybe the opinion that they were rubbish was not just mine.

I have updated my gear since (now I can afford it) but still have my trusty 62 P and lead amp and cab that served me so well for so many years.

Yeah my gigging set up is a 36 year old amp, 38 year old cab, and 32 year old bass. What I really get a kick out of is the fact that my recording/small gig/rehearsal/practice amp is older than my mom.

OP, if you can get by with a "piece o'crap" Fender Bassman then more power (so to speak) to you. I still get a pleasant feeling when I see a Blonde Blackface with its twin twelve cabinet. Loved the look but I only owned one for a weekend. As a bass amp the whole system was terrible. Took it back after one gig.

I am not as young as the dumb 19 year old...being only 26...but I find it odd that he would make such a stupid comment about your "older" bass rig. For me, I would interested as hell to check it out! I love to listen to vintage gear - it's way different than what we have now and the bass tones of the 70' and 60's (stuff I like) was created with that gear.

As I always say, if it works for you, use it!

Whoops! I misunderstood the first post! What I really meant to say is that anyone with vintage gear is pretty darn cool to me. I will inevitably be right next to your rig and listening closely to it!

HEHE!!

Try having a Scottish Father and an English Mother.....

Indeed, things could get a little "heated" from time to time....thank GOD they had both passed before Braveheart came out.....

My combo is only 20 year old and most people look at it like some sort of antique.
