Ashdown 300H vs. 2002 Ampeg SVT3 Pro

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just sold my Ampeg BA115 combo and bought an Ashdown 300H and Avatar 8 Ohm 1000W neo 4x10 cab. Now I'm selling my older Eden Nemesis 200W 4x10 and someone offered to trade me an Ampeg SVT3 Pro (2002 model- made in USA I believe). I wanted to reach out to anyone to find your thoughts.

I'm a bit of a hack in regards to my skill...I play in a cover band with a couple of loud guitar players. The Eden has worked fine, but I wanted to move to a Head/Cab rig and get some more power. The Ashdown is rated at 307W and the Ampeg is rated at 450W.

Appreciate your help out there...I'm really confused. I play a Musicman Sub and my back up is an Ibanez EDB 600.

Thanks, RedArmyNick

I doubt the difference in volume would be that great between the two heads. Tone wise they would be completely different if I remember correctly.

More speakers = more volume.

Man, these Ashdown vs. Ampeg threads (especially the 3Pro) usually don't end well. I love the 3Pro, but I seem to fall into the minority for it. I have no experience with Ashdown that I can recall, so the only thing I can add is -

Take a lot of the Ampeg hate with a grain of salt. If you get to try the 3 out first, do it under a 4ohm load. They do seem a bit underpowered at 8ohms, but they still deliver the goods. Make the input light blink over half the time under steady playing, and don't be afraid to crank the Gain knob.

There is a ton of flame to be read here based on this very amp. Do a search and get the popcorn.

Appreciate the insight...it's confusing as hell since I'm a bit of a hack at this and am just starting to understand tones. Hard to figure out what I want. My key concern is that neither amp (Ampeg at 450W 4 Ohm or Ashdown at 307W 4 Ohm) may be ideally suited for the 1000W 8 Ohm 4x10 Avatar cab. Wondering if I should just consider looking for even more power. I have an Eden Nemesis 200W Combo that, along with the Ashdown, might secure me a more powerful head.

If you are only going to be running 8ohms, the 3PRO isn't the best choice out there. I would personally look into a GK 1001RB, but YMMV.
