&, yes, quite SVT like with a bit of the valve grind control on, & can do a nice tubey OD if you push this control

Very reliable, no doubt, and a good old school tone for many types of music. I wouldn't compare it to an SVT, though, the valve drive is nice in small amounts but not exactly stellar. The sub-harmonics are somewhat useless and the EQ is not the most powerful I've tried. Generally a good amp, but you have to really dig the voicing or you will struggle with the EQ, IME. I found it hard to get nice, clear treble above a certain volume.
As for the 900, I haven't tried it but would suppose the extra headroom will help out with the treble. Of course, this all depends on the cabs you're using...

Of course, when I do play SVTs they're usually Classic 300s and those are quite difficult to emulate with a preamp. If the OP was referring to the hybrids then I'm out of my element. Carry on.

I've been using Ashdown ABM 500's(and on occasion the ABM 900)since 97. And IME you can get nice clear treble at pretty much any volume level but I think it really has a lot to do with the bass one is playing and how much gain is dialed in from the bass itself(and sometimes how much gain is dialed in from the internal gain dial inside the basses cavity). |
