Ashdown abm black edition, a Klystron?

Sign in to disble this ad
Today I recieved my Ashdown Abm 500 Evo iii Black Edition. This is handmade in the uk and limited to 40 pieces worldwide, so i was lucky to be in the market for an amp when these went on sale. When i got the amp the first thing I noticed was that the box said 'klystron 500 noir' on the side, so i immediately thought that they had accidently sent me an ashdown klystron but upon opening the box i found the black edition evo. Then i saw that the amp said klystron 500 on the front??? not abm evo iii and it also said klystron 500 on the back.... no evo written anywhere?

Now i realise that there is little difference between a klystron and an evo exept aesthetics and build quality, but the descriptions of this product when i was purchasing at no time mentioned it was a klystron. The Klystron range appears to be discontinued, which leaves me wondering as to whether my new head is made from leftover klystron parts. Can anyone shed any light on this? Ps: It sounds absolutely awesome!!!

The UK is where the Klystrons are made IIRC. It's my guess that it has Klystron components.

The Klystron was what the ABM range was originally back in 97 I think so guess they are just harking back to those and the UK built ones tend to have higher specced components so really you should be happy its a klystron... The black ones are very cool indeed and dont think theyve made many so nice and collectable

I believe the actual ABM range is all made in UK, mine is from last year is UK made (it says that on the amp).

The Klystron series always looked prety similar to AMB to me, maybe they have discontinued the klistrons and ABM is now UK made.

I have a very early 400 from their first batch in the 90's when they labelled them as Klystron Bass Magnifier. This is made in UK pre-ABM, pre-EVO, etc. My amp is rock solid and loud, still sounds great, so wear the Klystron badge with pride!

ABM production was moved to China several years ago, you would think Ashdown wouldn't move it back to the UK with no fuzz or announcements at all. Does your amp have the built in compressor (aka EVOIII)?

Cool. That only makes a great amp even more desirable.
