Ashdown AMB-300 combo vs EVO II-300 head and cab

Sign in to disble this ad
A while back I purchased a 1999 Ashdown AMB-210T-300 combo 2nd hand. Loved it although speakers were not original blueline ones. I found the sound a little dirty all the time - regardless of tube preamp blend.

I was thinking of moving on and found a Ashdown EVOII-300 head and 2x10 8 ohm cab which still had the blueline speakers and looked in excellent shape. So I bought it thinking to sell combo vs upgrading the speakers.

I am finding the head and cab combo to be very "muddy". I'm using good handmade big gauge speaker cable and have new preamp tube (same with older one).

In summary the combo is brighter but lacks depth. The head and cab have tons of depth but are quite muddy.
Same Fender Jazz played thru both. Same "high" setting for the tweeter. Variety of EQ setting tried. Subharmonics off.

I have played both both with a Sansamp DI put into thru the effects return to bypass the preamsp... The differences diminish but are still there to some extent...so does this mean the diff is power amp or speakers..

These are supposed to be the same amp more or less with the EVOII just a little more ahead on the solid state pre-amp side.

I have been two my amp tech with both and he cant figure it out

any suggestions::

someone has suggested I get the head resoldered (?) and that this has been linked to muddy sound...
