I think I may be in need of a speaker or 2...
The Avatar B212 I've been using has started to buzz and rattle a little and I have a sneaking suspicion that the speaker may be blown (or starting to go). It's my practice rig, so I don't have it in front of me currently, but last night, she no sound so good.
I'm sure I could just find the original speaker(s) through Avatar, but I was curious as to the possibility of another speaker working in the cabinet. Something with more durability, perhaps.
I know, I know... Thiele parameters and whatnot usually make the best solution the same speaker, but I have to ask.

Yes Avatar replacements are the easiest bet for good results. That said, the cab is also fairly well suited towards stock eminence deltaliteII2512's. Avatars "LF" versions give up a lot of mid and upper response in exchange for having slightly more excursion down low, not enough to be worth the tradeoff IMO. The stock emi's have almost as much xmax, may have slightly higher sensitivity and much better representation of the upper harmonics if that's what you're looking for. I have both the Avatar and stock versions and much prefer the stock emi's. If you wanted to go that route, you could get your Avatars re-coned to stock specs for a lot less than buying new neo's. |

Seeing as they made both models, I didn't know if it would make a difference which I use if I have to replace it. I'm guessing cost is the big factor, though.

If it's a 4ohm cab there's many replacement options if you would like a change in the tone. That's if you even have to replace them at all. Sometimes just the dustcap or a glue seam is coming loose somewhere. If that's the case, you could fix it yourself with a dollars worth of glue.
Tried it with the tweeter off? |
