B Plus winding on an SVT?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking around for tube amps and have come across a 73 Magnavox SVT. The seller says that the B plus winding is possibly shorted out, and he wouldn't use the amp until that's repaired.

So what is this, and what would it cost to have it repaired?

if the B+ (high tension/high voltage) is shorted out, you'll need either a new power transformer or have the stock one rewound. IMO, it could get pretty expensive, since a new SVT power trannies run about $255-$350. if you're not comfortable or experienced with working on high voltage tube amps, you also have to pay a tech to install it (depending on the tech, it usually takes about 1-2 hours for the installation, including re-setting the bias and checking everything else).

Hmm, the price he gave me is crazy low, so if it ends up costing $255 for a fliptops transformer, and then roughly ...I hope less than 400 for the tech to install it(?), I'd still be getting a 73 SVT for less than 1k.

go for it! I got mine (Magnavox) for 800 bucks it needs some servicing and maybe some aesthetic restoration but right now I got some other priorities...
