Backup power

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello ,
I need some advise from some of you power amp Guru's
I'am thinking about getting one of those crown class D power amps XLS1000 Drivecore, they are on sale at MF
I'am using a GK mb 200 micro amp for small gigs and like it
but was thinking I could use the micro as an preamp to the
drivecore if I or when I need more power and to drive more cabs or any combination of cabs that I have..
Will this work? Can I use the DI out or the Head phone out on the micro to the power amp to get my signal?

Any advise??? Thanks Eno

You'd use the line out, or preamp out, or effects send, NOT the DI.

+1

And yes it will work. You'd be using the same preamp and scaling up the power.

Check the input sensitivity of the Drivecore and make sure it matches what your MB200 can send. That's probably your biggest concern.

Rather than lug two pieces of equipment, why sell the Micro and buy a bigger head that will do what you need?

Yea A good point,I thoght of that too,But not many out there that go to 2ohms, and that what I need to run two 4 ohm cabs or the power amp that way I have two channels
to use and a bridge mode if I need big power.

I was looking at my owners manual on the GK MB200 and about the only choice I have is with the Balanced out or headphone jack on the back and it does not give any info on what it put out as far as a signal,I would think if it puts out enough to the headphones ,it should be enough signal for the power amp.
The xlr out and 1/4" out ,I don't think they put out enough
without running it thur an preamp or mixer.
As far as input sensitivity on the powe amp,I wonder if that is adjustable with the on board processer on the drivecore?
I will do a search for the owners manual and see.
Thanks Eno

The headphone output may not be as quiet as a normal line-out would be. And its output level could easily overdrive the input of a power amp if you're not careful.

As for the two-ohm situation, why not get another MB200 and use a splitter box to split your bass to both heads. Run two independent rigs and set their controls identically. Advantages: Fully duplicated rig for backup, simple connections, possible lower cost overall.
