I held off trying a Fodera for many years. I finally tried the Yin Yang Standard - went into the store wanting to hate it. I bought it the next day. That was my gateway drug. I now have a Yin Yang Deluxe that is just spectacular (chambered walnut body, ebony fingerboard, PJ setup) and a Matt Garrison Std (5 string, E-C). I liked that one so much I ordered a pair of fraternal twins that will be done early summer. 5-string, 34" scale, 24-fret neck-through Monarchs, strung E-C with drop D tuner, one fretted, one fretless. Them I'm done. | Damn that bass sounds incredible through that rig. Articulation and detail everywhere want it but nothing extraneous, pure beef and just enough grind and top where I like it, too.
These cabs really interest me, I know I would love them. |

Always nice (and unfortunately rare) to have a number of clips with very different basses and players, with the cab held constant. You can really start to hear the inherent basic tone of the cab carrying through the different clips, but also how the cab reacts to different amps, players, techiques, etc., etc.
Nice extra data points to have, given that these are almost impossible to 'try before buy'.
I would just point out again that I REALLY dislike most midrange driver loaded cabs. I LOVE both Roger's choice for that mid-driver, and also the way he lets the woofer breath a bit more up top before the crossover kicks in. And his tweaking of his OEM driver to sound NOT like a PA subwoofer, but rather a VERY good bass guitar speaker with 'PA subwoofer spec's) is brilliant.
When you combine that with the amazingly high quality construction (check out the pictures of the components and the box construction in the Bass Gear Magazine review), it really is a winner, and would work for most players IMO.
I've played and/or owned almost every mid driver loaded cab out there, and Roger's is one of the only one's that (IMO) doesn't sound like a midrange loaded cab... it sounds like a very good one way cab that sounds 'better' than the typical high end bass cab (i.e., a bit more present top end that is still very paper cone and a low end that just POUNDS at those key upper bass/lower mid frequencies without having to have lots of external, complex EQ to make it work).

much of a difference between the 500 and 900, other than output? I've been on the fence about a Puma 500 or 900 for a while now. I'm mostly using a Markbass F500 now. I'm told the Puma 500 might have more headroom then the F500.
I agree with you on the differences between the AE210 and the ML112. Good assessment. | Getting a bit OT here, but just quickly, IMO there would be no reason to purchase a Puma500 if you had an F500. Yeah, a bit cleaner, a touch less compression when pushed, but not enough to swap out, and the F500's EQ is more powerful.
In your case of often gigging high quality, small 8ohm cabs, the 900 run at 8ohms would probably be a life changer for you. The fixed four channel EQ on the Puma is amazing. Low, upper mid and treble virtually identical to the Markbass front end on the 'fixed EQ models' like the LMIII and F1, but the low mid control... oh baby, the fat, punchy, burp knob. Wonderful control.
I never used the 'taste filter' myself (too extreme for me, even used at very small 'off of noon/flat' settings) but it is a great control designed to go 'dub' when turned one way, and primarily designed for fretless players to cut lows and highs (a bit like the drive control on the TH500) to let the mwaw come out. |

That set up does work depending on your tone goals.
Out of the box it is very bright, but can be warmed nicely by either boosting the low mid or reducing the upper mid, I would also boost the bass a little and push the tube a bit.
I ended up getting great results in the end but fancied a change.
Volume was never an issue, even with one cab there was plenty on tap, with two it got silly! |

It can get surprisingly loud but more important to me is the way it responds to my EQ changes. I use the footswich and Global Signal Shape along with an Aguilar Tone Hammer and VT Bass pedal and my "preset tones" are very diverse and very well represented by the Baer cabs...my amp EQ is set almost flat...
I can say with utmost confidence that I have ZERO gas for any other cab...adding some other configuration in the future would be "nice" but I'm not convinced that it'd be able to out perform the Baer's on any level. |

Do you use the low end boost most to fill out the low end? |

I wound the mid frequency back all the way and then boosted the mid and bass levels to between 1 and 2 o clock to taste. A great tip that I got off this forum.
That made my Nordy jazz bass in passive mode sound quite fat with a sweet top end. |

That made my Nordy jazz bass in passive mode sound quite fat with a sweet top end. | You are talking about two different amps. He is talking about the variable filters on the Max 9.2, you are discussing the fixed on/off filters on the Shuttle. The Max execution is far superior, as is the dual semi-parametric midrange design.
Amazing head. Bigger than the Shuttle, but the extra features are WELL worth the size increase (including the wonderful FET channel). |

They are variable on the Max and fixed level on the Shuttle. That makes them MUCH more useful in sculpting the low end with the lo freq hi pass shift/boost, and also the 'scoop' filter and the treble boost filter, which are IMO much too extreme on the Shuttle to be particularly useful.
Being able to dial those filters in at various levels on the Max is very powerful IMO. |

I also did not realise those filters were adjustable, learned something new today! |

The settings I usually found working for me were bass @ 1:00,
mids at about 1K, down to 11:00, highs flat or @ 11:00.
I found that I used just about the same settings using the Berg AE210. If I needed more lows from the amp (not the speaker) I could add some with the active eq on the bass.
Roger preferred the Markbass LMII and the Eden Wt400. Not for power but more for the built in eq points. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
