Bagend, epifani, avatar?

Sign in to disble this ad
Im downsizing and currently am running an Ampeg SVT III pro through a peavey 410. I want to go with a 112 and will probally later on switch heads and add another 112.
Heres what caught my attention
Bagend S12d
Epifani UL2 112
Avatar 112 non neo
Aguilar DB112
I play alot of slap with a deep finger style that I either use my tone knob or the eq on my sting ray to achieve. I want good thump but not boom with nice low mids and high mids somewaht scooped but still there with a nice clear top end, nothing brittle and harsh.... IF I did change heads it would be to a Markbass LM III or Aguilar TH500. Volume isnt a big concern.

So what cab would you throw under the head I have with the idea in the back of your mind of what I would consider. It would be a while before I changed heads if at all.

thanks

I would look into the GK 112-II NEO.

My vote for tone would probably go to Epifani. They just sound so clean. However, for the price, you really can't beat Avatar IMO, they will more than get the job done and if you go used, you should have a hefty amount of pocket change leftover for something else.

On a side note, I don't see how you guys can get a deep tone or even play with a 5iver on a single speaker in a live setting. I have trouble keeping up with my Avatar B212 when my drummer gets going, sometimes even in the quieter passages. Whats your secret?

+1 going from 410's to a single 12 will drastically reduce your available volume. 2 12's would be much closer overall, but I think you may be headed toward failure with a single 12 of any flavor.

I dont play in bands anymore, its just for home use and being I have a little one on the way I wont be able to turn up loud anyway. Wife already throws a fit when I get the 410 going. Plus if I did join up with a group again I would add a second 112 to get the 4ohm load out of the amp. Im just looking for something that will satisfy my need to slap on a weekly basis.

I did look at the GK neo 112 but it seems to be lacking something in the bottom. I dont use 5 strings just for a bit of info.

Right now Im going through everthing I have and am getting rid of anything that I think I can do without. Not very happily, but things happen.

They get sweeter after some hours of use! If you have the cash it is very hard to beat Epifini though.

The clips Ive heard the Epifani sounds great, but Ive heard so many people that love the bag ends. So would you guys eliminate the Avatar in favor of the GK?

Build or buy yourself a fEarful 12/6, it'll smoke any of those other 1-12's. My Epifani 1-12 is long gone, sold for about what it cost me to build a 12/6.

In that case, I would strongly urge that you go out and find these cabs, to test with your own ears. What some people call awesome, I would trash, and vice versa. No substitute for ears on experience.

the bag end has no tweeter - it has a lot of high mids, but not tweeter like highs by any means. both are cool cabs, but based on your description, they might not be what you're after.

I have an Avatar 1-12 non neo and a Littlemark III that I am very happy with. Sounds very good to me and I have used with a full band , 2 guitars and drummer. Just don't expect it to shake the walls like a good 4-10 will.

LOL thats what I dont need now is shaking the walls Ivan what would you recommend? I cant really find a good clip of an Aggy DB. I cant really expect to spend more than say 600, and used is always an option.
I do have this right that most "clank" comes from the high mid freq. right?

i would recommend you check out as many cabs as you can with your head and your bass. As far as clank...it's hard to say - every player has their own definition of clank. Without some high mids you'll have no presence at all to your sound.

True........... definition of clank hmmm.. I would say Fieldy from Korn is just about all clank.

Here this may help if your familiar with the SVTIII pro... setting...

Bright on
pad on
gain 3 oclock
hi on
low off
low 12 oclock
mid 12 oclock
mid freq set to set 4.....1.6k
treble 1 oclock
master varies
tube gain full clock wise
3band engaged

33hrzt about 6 line boosted
80-slightly below 33hrzt
150- slightly below 80hrzt
300, 600, 900 set to 0
2hrzt- boosted about 3 lines
5hrzt- slightly abouve 2hrzt
9hrzt- level with 5 hrzt
Level- Level with 9 hrzt

tweet on peavey 410 tx set to a little about 1/4 of the way up.
Hope that makes some sense.
I use an American Jazz and a EBMM sting ray for slap I boost treble and bass vol all the way up and roll the mids back to half way. For a deep finger style I boost the mids all the way bass all the way and roll the treble back to half or all the way off. On the jazz I'll roll the tone knob down to about a 1/4 of the way on for a similar sound to finger style on the EBMM. Other wise everything is open for slap on the jazz.

So if it's for home use and you like the SVT sound would an Ampeg Micro-VR head and cabinet be worth considering?
