Bah Humbug!! My Micro VR just blew up!

Sign in to disble this ad
My replacement micro vr head just died, I've only used it 3 times!!
I figured I would practice since I had some time to myself and get some use out of my micro vr,plugged it in, started to crackle and pop and then started to give off that awful smell of burning electronics.

Time to get a new head, maybe a pf500 or pf350. or maybe a different head altogether.
C'mon Ampeg, I love this head but I'm getting frustrated with your Q.C. issues.

Wow, I'm sorry. That would suck any time of the year, but it's even worse around the holidays. Is it still under warranty? The other day I flipped my amp on, smelled something burning, panicked and turned it back off, just to find that the guitar player had turned on the floor heater at the same time. That was a relief.

What a drag! Maybe they read too much into your location?

It should be under warranty, I just had it replaced due to the tolex coming unglued. As for the location, Lemonville is the nickname for the town I live in.

At least it didn't die on a gig like my Mesa did last month. Destroyed my gig.

Sucks that it died, but better it happened playing at home than when playing out! The warranty is also a good thing....

DON'T get a PF500 or PF350! I heard from a friend that worked at GC for a long time that every single one of those heads he sold all came back because they eventually broke, too. Ampeg blows now...look into something else.

You shouldn't generalize like that. Ampeg has really got back on their feet since they came into new ownership again, and I've been really impressed with a lot of the stuff they've come out with. I don't run a PF350 or 500, but I've tried them out fairly extensively and I can tell you they are NOT crap, not even close! The PF500 happens to be the best selling Class D bass head in the world, they didn't get that far by "blowing"

Sorry to hear that about your Micro VR, they're cool little heads! PF500 + SVT210AV x2 is a killer rig, I wouldn't hesitate to go that route if I were you.

I seriously doubt every single PF350/500 sold at your friend's GC were returned defective. 100% failure rate is very hard to believe.

Also, I don't own a single Ampeg product, but to say everything Ampeg manufactures currently "blows" is just an ignorant comment.

Every unit I doubt, but there were some troubles when the product launched. Changes have been made. I sill haven't seriously considered buying any of the current (LOUD) Ampegs, but if they prove themselves and don't sell off the line to someone else.....maybe?

Note to self: when the tolex comes unglued on my Micro VR, just use some Liquid Nails to glue it back down, do not return it to Ampeg for replacement.

Hey Bstring, I did find your reply funny, it's all good.
yeah, stuff happens and I'm lucky that it didn't happen at a gig.

Ampeg have turned it around with their product, I wouldn't hesitate to buy their rigs. Just luck of the draw I suppose.

While there have been some early failures, improper use does not count as defective equipment. Many of the perceived failures went away, once the owner contacted CS and learned how to use the product correctly. Don't you think Ampeg would have a recall, to protect the company, if they were having excessive failure rates?

Sorry to hear of your Micro VR problems ... too bad as I understand they're great sounding heads when they work. I've heard a lot of bad things about the Asian made Ampegs. A salesman at a local music store who used to be a huge Ampeg dealer for many years told me that they've stopped carrying the Asian made ones because so many of them were coming back with problems. There are plenty of used USA made ones out there that can be had for very reasonable coin which might be worth looking into.
